Accessibility
In the past, reaching Rajgundha was a journey undertaken solely by foot, with trekkers embarking on a scenic hike from either Bara Garan or Billing. However, recent developments have changed this. A new, albeit challenging, road has been carved through the rugged terrains, extending Rajgundha's reach from both Billing and Barot via Bara Garan.
It is recorded that in 1950's, the then Chief Minister of Punjab, Partap Singh Kairon, visited Rajgundha village, which was then a remote and inaccessible area. After his visit, he directed his government to construct a proper road that would connect the village to the rest of the region. While a road was built till RajGundha and Chief Minister Kairon visited again in his Jeep in 1960, it was not maintained properly, and over time it became unusable. However, in 2022, the road was repaired and maintained to be in working condition, allowing the villagers and tourists to finally have a safe and reliable motorable road. This has been a significant development for both the villagers and tourists who want to visit this remote region. The new road has made it much easier and safer for tourists to travel to and from Rajgundha village, giving them a chance to experience the unique culture and natural beauty of the area.
While this road has indeed made Rajgundha more accessible, it's essential to be aware of its conditions before embarking on this journey. The road, still in its nascent stage, presents a rough and bumpy ride, making it suitable only for vehicles with high ground clearance.
Sedans and hatchbacks might struggle to negotiate the path, but SUVs should be able to traverse it more comfortably.
Moreover, the road's accessibility is subject to the whims of the weather. The
monsoon season often sees the path becoming blocked due to landslides and heavy rains, while the winter months can make the road impassable due to snowfall. Therefore, it's crucial to check the latest weather conditions and road status before planning your journey.
Despite these challenges, the journey to Rajgundha can be an adventure in itself. The raw, untamed beauty of the surroundings makes for a memorable experience, with every bump in the road taking you deeper into the heart of this Himalayan wonderland. However, always prioritise safety and ensure your vehicle is well-equipped for the journey.
